1. To quell labour unrest, smart cards for unorganised sector in the works

i. Unorganised sector workers, who account for an estimated 82.7 per cent of the country’s total labour force, have largely been out of the ambit of labour regulations and most social schemes.

ii.  Under the new scheme, they are expected to get multiple facilities through new smart cards called U-WIN, or the unorganised workers’ identification number.

iii. The cards will be marketed as a starting point for the formulation of schemes to provide life and disability cover including health and maternity benefits as well as old-age protection for unorganized sector workers.
iv. The cards will be issued by the district administration of each state. The project is proposed to be funded largely by the Centre and will subsequently be linked to Aadhaar and bank accounts of these workers.

v. To register, a person must be at least 14 years of age and must issue a self-declaration that he or she is an unorganised worker. 

vi. The card, launched on December 25, 2014 in Gujarat on a pilot basis, will eventually replace the earlier smart card issued under the Rashtriya Swastha Bima Yojana.

2. Manoj Mishra appointed as CMD of National Fertilizers Ltd

i. Government has appointed Manoj Mishra as Chairman and Managing Director of state-run National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL). NFL's CMD post fell vacant after the retirement of Neeru Abrol in February 2014.
ii. NFL has five gas-based urea plants viz Nangal & Bathinda in Punjab, Panipat in Haryana and two plants at Vijaipur in District Guna, Madhya Pradesh.

iii. The company has a total annual installed capacity of 35.68 lakh tonnes and is the second largest producer of urea in the country.

3. Buhari assumes charge as President

i. Muhammadu Buhari formally takes over as Nigeria’s President.

ii. Mr. Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party accused President Goodluck Jonathan’s ousting administration for deliberately handing over the nation in its worst state since independence 55 years ago.

iii.  No electricity, no fuel, workers are on strike, billions are owed to state and federal workers, $60 billion owed in national debt and the economy is virtually grounded.

iv. But across Nigeria, confidence is still high that Mr. Buhari, who headed a military government in the 1980s, will fix the mess.

4. Bangladesh ratifies boundary pact protocol

i. The Bangladeshi Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ratified the protocol on the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) with India.

ii. The ratification was the last of the approvals needed for the implementation of the protocol signed during the visit of the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to Dhaka four years ago for exchange of enclaves.

iii. The Indian Parliament ratified it recently.Exchange of instruments will now take place during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.

iv. Under the protocol, 111 Indian enclaves inside Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi ones inside India were to be exchanged. Bangladesh will also get 2,777 acres of land, while India will get 2,267 acres.

5. Isro's ground station in Vietnam

i. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has mooted a proposal for a ground station in Vietnam.

ii. The organization already has a network of ground stations within the country, one in Mauritius and two in Indonesia.

iii. The proposal is going to help India receive process and use data from Indian satellites for a variety of applications including disaster management support.

iv. It can also be used to provide training in space science, technology and applications which will benefit other members of Association of South-East Asian Nations.

6. Government clears FDI proposals of single-brand retailers like Mont Blanc, Forever and others worth Rs 281 crore

i. India has cleared foreign investment proposals of single-brand retailers Forever, Mont Blanc, Oliver Fashion and 19 others worth nearly Rs 281 crore.

ii. The approved FDI proposals were based on recommendations of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)

iii. Forever Living Imports (India)'s Rs 18.30 crore proposal to undertake retailing of 'Forever' brand products in India also received FIPB nod.

iv. The board, however, deferred Kotak Mahindra Bank's proposal to raise foreign investment limit in the bank to 55%.

7. 15% salary bonanza for bank employees

i. Salaries and allowances of bank employees will increase by 15 per cent after Bank Unions and industry body Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) signed a wage deal.

ii. The wage settlement also includes a medical insurance scheme for the families of employees and additional holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays of a month.
