1. S Christopher appointed DRDO chief

i. The government has appointed distinguished scientist Dr. S. Christopher as Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Dr. G.S. Reddy as Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

ii. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved appointment of Dr. Christopher as Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development-cum-Director General, DRDO for a period of two years.

iii. Dr. Christopher is currently Distinguished Scientist and Programme Director (airborne early warning and control system) and Director, Centre for Air-Borne Systems in Bengaluru, Dr. Reddy is Distinguished Scientist and Director, Research Centre Imarat and Programme Director of Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) project.

2. First mega Food Park of Northeast to be inaugurated in Assam

i. The first mega food park of North East is inaugurated at Nathkuchi in Nalbari district of Assam.

ii. Ministry of Food Processing Industries is implementing a Mega Food Park Scheme in the country since 2008, to give a major boost to the food processing sector by adding value and reducing food wastage and loss at each stage of the supply chain with particular focus on perishables.

iii. A Mega Food Park is set up in an area of a minimum of 50 acres. Common facilities and enabling infrastructure is created at Central Processing Centre and Infrastructure for primary processing and storage is created near the farm in the form of Primary Processing Centres (PPCs) and Collection Centres (CCs).

3. India tops hunger list

i. India is home to 194.6 million undernourished people, the highest in the world, according to the annual report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

ii. Top ten countries are India (194.6 million), China (133.8 million), Pakistan (41.4 million), Ethiopia (31.6 million), Bangladesh (26.3 million), Indonesia (19.4 million), Tanzania (16.8 million), Philippines (13.7 million), Nigeria (12.9 million) and North Korea (10.5 million).

iii. 72 out of 129 countries monitored by FAO have achieved the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the prevalence of undernourishment by 2015.

4. Modi, Hasina to open border haat in Tripura

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina would jointly inaugurate a second border haat (market) in Tripura through video conferencing when the former visits Dhaka.

ii. Traders from India and Bangladesh can transact 16 and 15 selected commodities respectively at the haat. A border haat meant for the locals was first opened in Meghalaya.

5. 23-year-old US-educated Yaduveer crowned ‘Maharaja of Mysuru’

i. In a traditional ceremony, US-educated Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar, the adopted son of Pramoda Devi Wodeyar, was crowned as the titular head of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family.

6. Kochi gets provisional nod to host FIFA under-17 World Cup

i. Kochi has been provisionally selected as a host of the 2017 under-17 FIFA World Cup.

7. Abhinav Bindra earns India another quota place for Rio Olympics

i. Abhinav Bindra became the fourth Indian shooter to win a quota place for the Rio Olympics after he finished sixth in the Men's 10m Air Rifle final at the ISSF Shooting World Cup in Munich.

ii. Gagan Narang, Jitu Rai and Apurvi Chandela are the other Indians to have secured an Olympic quota earlier.

Miscellaneous News

i. Taxi aggregator TaxiForSure announced a tie-up with mobile commerce platform Paytm to enable Paytm users to pay for the cab service through their prepaid wallet. TaxiForSure has also improved its app to facilitate bookings in 10 seconds instead of 15.
ii.  The Centre’s ‘gold monetisation scheme’, which is being relaunched soon, will allow customers to deposit as low as 30 gm gold with banks for a certain period and earn interest. At the end of the deposit term, customer can either extend the scheme for one or more years, withdraw the gold or get cash in lieu of the same.
iii. Facebook has now come up with a plan which will allow businesses to reach new customers through WhatsApp. Whatsapp is one of the largest service which beat Twitter and Instagram as well.
