1. PM goes to Lahore, makes a Christmas date with history

• With two unannounced stops, in Kabul and Lahore on Christmas day, Prime Minister 
Narendra Modi rewrote the recent history of geo-politics in the region.

• While his travel to Kabul on the way back from Moscow was widely anticipated and had been reported by The Hindu earlier this week, his stopover in Pakistan, the first by an Indian Prime 
Minister in 11 years, caught everyone, including senior officials, by surprise. 

• Officials in Delhi and Islamabad told The Hindu that Mr. Modi had telephoned his Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from Kabul to wish him on his birthday, and during the call, made plans to travel to Lahore to wish him personally a few hours later.

1. Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan to participate in World Speakers' Conference in Geneva

i. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan would be participating in the preparatory committee of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)'s Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at Geneva next month.

ii.   Sumitra Mahajan will participate in the third meeting of the preparatory committee of IPU's fourth world conference of Speakers of Parliament at Geneva on June 1 and 2, 2015.

iii. IPU, Geneva will be convening the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament - a global summit focusing on democracy, role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the United Nations.

1. GDP grows by 7.3%

i. India grew 7.3 per cent during 2014-15, the first financial year presided over by the Modi government, failing to overtake China as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

ii. During the January-March quarter, however, India grew 7.5 per cent beating China’s 7 per cent. Capital formation remained lower at 28.7 per cent of the GDP against 29.7 per cent during 2013-14.

1. S Christopher appointed DRDO chief

i. The government has appointed distinguished scientist Dr. S. Christopher as Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Dr. G.S. Reddy as Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

ii. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved appointment of Dr. Christopher as Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development-cum-Director General, DRDO for a period of two years.

1. NASSCOM launches Cyber Security Task Force:

i. National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and Data Security Council of India have launched NASSCOM Cyber Security Task Force.

ii. The task force aims to build India as a global hub for providing cyber security solutions, developing cyber security R&D plan and develop a skilled workforce of cyber security experts.

iii. The task force members will include industry leaders across IT, BPM and internet, heads of user organizations like banks and telcos as well as representatives from the government and academia.

1. To quell labour unrest, smart cards for unorganised sector in the works

i. Unorganised sector workers, who account for an estimated 82.7 per cent of the country’s total labour force, have largely been out of the ambit of labour regulations and most social schemes.

ii.  Under the new scheme, they are expected to get multiple facilities through new smart cards called U-WIN, or the unorganised workers’ identification number.

iii. The cards will be marketed as a starting point for the formulation of schemes to provide life and disability cover including health and maternity benefits as well as old-age protection for unorganized sector workers.
